Statement of Dr. Rafiqul Islam, Secretary of Health Affairs, Bangladesh Nationalist Party - BNP
The recurring attacks on doctors and healthcare professionals are deeply concerning. Today, at the Cox's Bazar Medical College Hospital, a critical patient died in the ICU, which led to vandalism at the hospital and physical assault on the on-duty doctor, Sajib Kazi. At one point, the doctor lost consciousness and collapsed on the ground, a moment captured in photos and videos that have shaken our collective conscience. Doctors are the primary source of support for patients, but a malicious group seems intent on destabilizing this environment by repeatedly pitting patients and their families against healthcare providers.
Recently, similar incidents have taken place at Dhaka Medical College, Mugda Medical College, and Shaheed Sohrawardy Medical College Hospital. Despite repeated demands for the security of doctors and hospital staff, such incidents are aggravating the already growing sense of insecurity among the medical community.
Healthcare is a fundamental right. One of the key conditions for ensuring this right is providing security to doctors in hospitals. This has been a longstanding demand since the regime of the fascist government, but there has been no visible progress in fulfilling this demand, causing deep frustration among doctors.
It is time to investigate whether collaborators of the autocratic fascists are involved in orchestrating these continuous attacks. Let us not forget that the fascist elements are lurking in key sectors, including the health department.
Thus, it is our responsibility to stop these violent attacks. Ensuring the safety of doctors has become one of the most important demands of our time.
Therefore, I urge the immediate investigation of these attacks on doctors, and any hidden conspiracies or malintent behind them must be uncovered. If the healthcare system collapses, it will be detrimental for everyone.
I strongly condemn all forms of attacks on doctors and demand that those responsible for these assaults be identified and brought to justice promptly.
