"June 16, 1975 is a black day in the history of Bangladesh. On this day, the then extremely authoritarian Bakshal government kept 4 newspapers loyal to them and closed the rest and silenced the entire nation. As a result, many news workers working in various newspapers became unemployed. Their livelihood and the future of their children was uncertain. The main spirit of our independence war was the geographical independence and democracy of Bangladesh. Civil liberties of people are guaranteed in democracy. The main condition of human freedom is freedom of speech, thought and expression. Which manifests itself in the freedom of the press. But the post-independence rulers betrayed the very spirit of the freedom struggle and stalled the progress of multi-party democracy by establishing a one-party vassal system. Deprivation of freedom of the press is essentially the imprisonment of thought and conscience.
