The medical board, formed to treat BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, has completed the procedure for implanting a pacemaker in her chest at the city's Evercare Hospital.

She will be under the supervision of doctors in the critical care unit (CCU) for the next 72 hours, AZM Zahid Hossain, personal physician of Khaleda, said Sunday evening.

"Khaleda zia has a cardiac problem and there was a block in her heart for which stenting was done earlier. The medical board decided to implant a pacemaker considering her physical condition," he said earlier.

Zahid sought prayers from the people of the country for her speedy recovery.

The BNP chairperson has been receiving treatment at the critical care unit (CCU) since she was admitted to the hospital early Saturday.

Khaleda Zia was admitted to Evercare Hospital in the capital due to a deterioration in her physical condition on Friday. The 79-year-old leader suffers from arthritis, heart disease, respiratory issues, liver and kidney problems, and diabetes among other complications.

Previously, Khaleda Zia was admitted to Evercare Hospital in Dhaka on August 9, 2023. At that time, she received treatment in the CCU for two days.

On October 27, 2023, Khaleda Zia underwent a successful surgery to implant a pacemaker in her bloodstream due to cirrhosis of the liver.

When her health stabilized a bit, she was taken home after more than five months.
