Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Secretary General of the BNP, stated that a new tribunal is being established to sideline leaders and activists of the opposition party from politics. He provided evidence indicating that the Prime Minister has instructed to expedite the disposal of all cases against opposition members. Therefore, efforts are underway to quickly resolve cases involving opposition leaders.

Alamgir shared this information during a press conference held at the BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan political office on Sunday afternoon. The press conference was organized to announce the decisions made during the BNP Standing Committee meeting held on the night of May 8.

During the press conference, Mirza Alamgir presented evidence, stating, “The Ministry of Law has explicitly stated that some cases will be tried without a hearing, using the judiciary to facilitate the process.”

The BNP Secretary General added, “So far, approximately 2,000 leaders and activists have been imprisoned based on entirely fabricated, false, and missing cases.”

“We have received information that a new tribunal is being established,” the BNP Secretary General said, suggesting that this move aims to imprison all those involved in opposition politics. The primary objective of the current ruling administration, he claimed, is to eradicate politics from the country entirely, allowing only its own political activities.

Mirza Alamgir remarked, “I see their (the government’s) attempt to eliminate politics in every election. They decide the candidates, even for the so-called opposition parties. They also arrange dummy candidates and fix their seats.”

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir addressed a press conference after a six-month hiatus. His last press conference was held on October 27. On October 28 of last year, a BNP rally in Dhaka was disrupted by a police and Awami League attack. Alamgir was arrested that day and remained in prison for approximately three and a half months until he was released on bail on February 15. Following his release, he traveled to Singapore for medical treatment. He returned home after performing the holy Umrah last week. Subsequently, he addressed a youth party rally in Nayapaltan, Dhaka yesterday. Today, Mirza Fakhrul held a press conference.
