A Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court on Sunday sent main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir to jail in a case filed on charges of attack on chief justice’s residence and vandalising there.

Metropolitan Magistrate Shafi Uddin passed the order after police had produced him before the court with a plea to keep him jail in connection with the case.

Defence lawyer submitted a petition seeking bail for Fakhrul but the court rejected the bail petition after hearing from both the sides.

Protesting his arrest, a huge number of pro-BNP lawyers gathered at the district court premises and chanted slogans demanding his release.

Earlier, Fakhrul was shown arrested in the case filed with Ramna police station on Sunday against Mirza Fakhrul and standing committee member Mirza Abbas among 59 leaders and activists for attack on the chief justice’s residence.
