A day before the election of the Supreme Court Bar Association, the convener of the sub-committee on the conduct of the election said the senior lawyer of the Supreme Court. After Mansurul Haque Chowdhury resigned citing 'personal' reasons. Pro-Awami League lawyers attacked pro-BNP lawyers with police to block the one-sided election of lawyers supported by Awami League.

Prior to this, both parties agreed. Mansurul Haque Chowdhury was accepted as the convener even though Mansurul Haque Chowdhury had earlier been defeated by the BNP nominated candidate from the Awami League supported panel in the Samiti elections.

Lawyer ZI Khan Panna told Prothom Alo that Mansurul Haque Chowdhury is a responsible and personable person. He is not supposed to resign unless something serious happens. Something must have happened to him, due to which he was forced to resign.

When Mansurul Haque resigned last Tuesday evening, Awami League-backed lawyers as convener of the sub-committee. Nominated Moniruzzaman. Later that day, BNP-backed lawyers nominated ASM Moktar Kabir Khan as convener.

According to eyewitnesses, the Awami League nominated convener went to the three-floor conference room of the association to sign the ballot papers on Tuesday night as part of the commencement of the election process. Pro-BNP lawyers objected to this. A commotion started with this. At one point, there was a back-and-forth chase and scuffle between the two sides. In this situation, the police suddenly arrived at the scene and kicked out the pro-BNP lawyers and journalists from there.

At least 25 people including lawyers and journalists were injured in police beatings. After that, polling started around 12 noon. The current president of the association, the convener of the designated sub-committee of the Awami League-led section along with the secretary. Voting continued under the leadership of Moniruzzaman.

Among the injured journalists, ATN News journalist Javed Akhtar is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the capital. Other victims of the attack are Prothom Alo photojournalist Shubhra Kanti Das, Jago News senior journalist Fazlul Haque Mridha, Ajker's SM Noor Mohammad, Independent Television's Jannatul Ferdaus, Baisakhi Television's camera person Ibrahim Hossain, ATN Bangla's camera person Humayun Kabir and Manabzamin's Abdullah Al known
