Statement of Tarique Rahman, Acting Chairman of BNP
Dear Countrymens,
At this historic moment of glory, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the brave students and people of Bangladesh.
With the sacrifice of thousands of martyrs, the historic revolution of the people has led to the fall of the mass murderer, Hasina. Bangladesh has been freed from tyranny. Bangladesh, achieved through the sacrifice of millions of martyrs has triumphed. This historic revolution once again proves that if we remain united, regardless of party or opinion, no one can ever defeat Bangladesh.
At this moment of victory, I pay my deepest respects to those mothers who lost their beloved children in this popular uprising. Over the past 15 years of fascist rule, many have lost their dearest fathers, many wives have lost their husbands, and countless mothers have been left bereaved due to abductions, killings, and disappearances. The martyrdom of your children and the sacrifices of your loved ones have led Bangladesh to another victory on 5 August 2024.
In making this historic revolution successful, many students and people have been injured. Throughout their suffering in homes, hospitals, or clinics, all of Bangladesh stands with you in love. Many people have been falsely charged and imprisoned while protesting against the murderer Hasina; we demand the immediate withdrawal of all false cases against them and their release. We also hope that the government will prioritize ensuring that students can return to their dormitories, hostels, classes, and take their exams as usual.
Dear Fellow Citizens,
By holding the country’s 180 million people hostage and depriving 12.5 crore voters of their voting rights, Bangladesh was turned into a subservient state. With the fall of the mass murderer Hasina, the people have paved the way to restore their plundered democracy and human rights. The ultimate success of this historic revolution will be achieved when, through a free, fair election, the 12.5 crore voters of Bangladesh can elect a government accountable to the people, establish equality and human dignity in the state, government, administration, and ultimately create a democratic, equitable state and society.
To reach the ultimate goal of this historic revolution, a free, fair, and impartial election must be organized as soon as possible. Power must be transferred to the representatives elected by the people. The BNP, along with every democratic political party in Bangladesh, will cooperate to organize a free and fair election aimed at establishing an equitable democratic Bangladesh.
I would like to make a humble appeal to you: The joy of victory is magnified when the defeated are safe. Therefore, celebrate this moment of victory and freedom from oppression peacefully. Please refrain from acts of revenge or retaliation. Do not take the law into your own hands. Be vigilant to ensure that the achieved victory does not deviate from its course.
Like in 1952, 1971, or 1990, the student public has once again made history with a new victory. Congratulations once again to the beloved people of Bangladesh.
Allah Hafez, Bangladesh Zindabad, Bangladesh Nationalist Party - BNP Zindabad."
