Honourable Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Mr Tarique Rahman has inaugurated the re-excavation work of the nearly dead Dharar Khal (Bailar Khal) in Dariapur of Trishal Upazila in Mymensingh.
Tarique Rahman arrived in Trishal by road from Dhaka this afternoon. Despite stormy weather and rain, he first unveiled the plaque of Dharar Khal. Later, he went down beside the canal and formally launched the excavation work by cutting soil with a spade. He then planted a palm tree sapling beside the canal.
Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu, State Minister for Textiles and Jute Shariful Alam, local Member of Parliament Mahbubur Rahman Liton, and Administrator of Mymensingh District Council Syed Emran Saleh Prince were present at the event.
It is worth mentioning that Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman excavated this 3.1-kilometre-long canal on 6 September 1979. Over time, it gradually turned into an almost dead canal.
After planting the tree and visiting the excavation site, the Prime Minister delivered a speech to local residents from a stage set up beside the canal.
Party leaders and activists welcomed him with warm applause.
Local women, marginal farmers, and children also expressed enthusiasm after seeing the Prime Minister up close and repeatedly greeted him with applause.
