On the occasion of ‘Democracy Killing Day,’ BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir issued the following statement:
“With the dishonest intention of holding onto power indefinitely, the then Awami League government established the one-party system of BAKSAL on January 25, 1975, exiling democracy. All political parties except BAKSAL were banned, and all newspapers, except four government-approved ones, were shut down. Through this decision, multiparty democracy and the people’s freedom of speech and expression were strangled.
Not only that, but they also curtailed fundamental rights by interfering with assemblies and gatherings, effectively trampling human rights. The BAKSAL regime reached its peak in robbing the people of their voting rights. Freedom of speech, thought, conscience, expression, organization, and assembly were taken away under the tyranny of authoritarianism. Pluralism was destroyed, disrupting social stability and balance.
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party - BNP has always been firmly committed to upholding the people’s fundamental rights, freedom of speech, and the right of newspapers and the media to express themselves freely.
For the sake of the country and the nation, we must work together to overcome the remnants of chaos left by the fallen, illegitimate Awami League government and ensure democracy and the people’s voting rights. Let our commitment on Democracy Killing Day be to restore these rights.
Allah Hafez, Bangladesh Zindabad.”
