BNP’s Acting Chairman Mr. Tarique Rahman issued the following statement on the occasion of ‘Democracy Killing Day:

“On January 25, 1975, the then Awami League government, in its bid to establish permanent rule, strangled multiparty democracy and replaced it with a one-party system known as 'BAKSAL.' To implement this system, they forcefully passed the inhumane and medieval Fourth Amendment law in the National Parliament, disregarding any opposing views. During that time, all newspapers were shut down, leaving only four government-approved newspapers to operate. The freedoms and democracy achieved through the long struggle of the people were crushed, spreading a dense darkness of chaos across society.
In their delusional pursuit of prolonging their barbaric one-party rule, they jeopardized not only democracy but also the unity, solidarity, and sovereignty of the country. Their behavior towards the opposition was never guided by any principles of civility. At that time, prisons became the only home for opposition members.
Faced with the combined and unstoppable student and public movement on August 5, the anti-democratic and disconnected illegal Awami League government was forced to flee the country.
Now, the people must remain resolute to overcome any conspiracies and restore democracy, freedom of speech, individual liberty, and the right to vote.
