Message from BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on the 40th Death Anniversary of Abdul Momen Khan

"On the 40th death anniversary of Abdul Momen Khan, a founding member of BNP, the successful Minister of Food in the cabinet of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman Bir Uttam, former MP and Cabinet Secretary, and the architect of modern Narsingdi, I pay my deepest respects to his memory.

Abdul Momen Khan played a historic role in the struggle to ensure citizens’ rights, including freedom of speech, individual liberties, and freedom of thought. He was esteemed as a refined and wise politician in the political arena of this country. As a founding member of BNP and its predecessor, JAGODAL, he dedicated himself to organizing and strengthening the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. As a minister, he made significant contributions to the international arena and the development of the nation and his constituency.

During his time at Dhaka University, Abdul Momen Khan was elected the first 'Speaker' (now VP) of Fazlul Huq Hall’s student council following its establishment. He excelled in public speaking, debates, and other extracurricular activities, which enriched his subsequent professional life.

As a government official, Abdul Momen Khan earned a distinguished reputation. He secured first place in a senior civil service training course in Lahore and received the valedictorian honor from then-Rector D.K. Power (ICS). Based on his merit, he rose to the highest government position in Bangladesh as Cabinet Secretary. Throughout his illustrious career, he also served as Chairman of the Khulna Development Authority, Divisional Commissioner of Khulna, Secretary of the Provincial Government’s Public Works, Power and Energy, and Irrigation Departments, and Secretary of the Food Ministry and National Parliament Secretariat with great success.

In 1977, Abdul Momen Khan was invited to President Ziaur Rahman’s Advisory Council and was appointed Minister of Food. Due to his eloquence and widespread popularity, he became the highest-vote-getting ( in the 300 seat) MP in Bangladesh’s 2nd parliamentary elections, representing Narsingdi-1.

His contributions to establishing Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman’s nationalist vision will always be remembered with reverence by the party and the nation.

I pray for the forgiveness of Abdul Momen Khan’s departed soul and extend my condolences to his family and well-wishers."
